GMAT Exam Unexpected Situations Survival Guide: Don’t Just Accept Your Fate, Learn How to Appeal Step-by-Step

Encountering an Accident (Earthquake/Crash/Noise) at the GMAT Test Center? Self-Preservation SOP: Report On-Site and Get a Case Number!

Encountering unexpected disturbances at the GMAT test center is quite common. While you might always feel like it’s “something that happens to other people,” this is actually due to a lack of information flow among test-takers.As an information reporting hub for test-takers (aka. the “Victim HUB”), Dustin has collected numerous test center incidents over the years, the details of which are beyond your imagination.

Test Center Horror Stories You Might Encounter

These real-life cases include, but are not limited to:

  • All provided pens ran out of ink
  • The noteboard couldn’t be written on or erased
  • Raised hand to request a new noteboard, but no test center staff responded for a long time
  • Major construction outside the test center, causing huge noise
  • Air conditioning broke down, sweating profusely in the test center
  • Computer crashed halfway through the exam
  • Test center staff ended your break time early
  • Test center staff frequently walked in the aisle, even bumping into your desk and chair
  • The pen of the test-taker next to you flew over
  • The person next to you was shaking their leg so much that your floor was vibrating
  • A sudden 0403-level earthquake occurred at the test center

Everyone, please imagine: your mental state is already so tense when taking the exam. If any of the above situations occur, it’s very easy for your cognitive thinking system to completely disconnect.

All test-takers must remember the following crucial self-preservation SOP.

The Only Self-Preservation SOP: Report On-Site, Get a Case Number!

No matter what unexpected situation affects your exam, you must immediately report it to the on-site Test Administrator (TA) and strongly demand that they use Pearson VUE’s internal system to report the incident, and ask them for a “Case Number.”

Why is this step crucial?

Because once you leave the test center, if you try to appeal based solely on your own words, the evidence will be quite weak. You might naively think: “There are surveillance cameras at the test center! The computers also have console logs! Can’t they just check them?”

But, do you really trust the “player and referee”?

Without a record reported by the on-site test center staff through their internal system as evidence, no matter how much you argue later, you will most likely only receive a templated official response. Below is a standard example of a “player and referee” giving a blatant excuse. Read it and imagine if it would make your blood boil:

At our testing centers, there are some distractions we are unable to prevent as they are out of our control.

(At the test center, there will always be some uncontrollable distractions)

Some of those distractions may include but are not limited to, individuals entering and exiting the testing room, coughing, speaking due to communicating with the test administrator, typing, or other noises associated with taking an exam & other candidates.

Pearson VUE is not able to offer a fully silent exam environment, there will always be a level of background noise from activity within the test center.

As per the test Center, Earplugs & Noise cancellation headphones were also provided by the TA. We have checked with the site and they have stated that there were no complaints from other candidates on the day about noise distraction and we have no other cases logged from this site on the day relating to noise.

Do you understand? If you don’t have an on-site case number, they can easily say “no one else complained that day,” and your appeal will sink without a trace.

Your Goal: A Free Retake Voucher

With a case number reported by on-site staff, you gain an official witness. This not only helps you communicate smoothly with customer service (with a verifiable record) but, more importantly, can minimize (though not guarantee) the risk of the official “player and referee” scenario.

In this situation, the only goal you can and should strive for is:A free Voucher, allowing you to reschedule your exam!

It’s impossible to ask the official body to change your score, as this would affect the fairness of the exam.

[Important] Retake Restrictions You Must Know

Even if you successfully obtain a Voucher, please note:

  1. Rescheduling the exam does not invalidate the previous one. This means that, within the limit of 5 exams per year, this disturbed examwill still be counted as one.
  2. The cooling-off period still applies. You will still need to wait for the 16-day cooling-off period to pass before taking your next exam.

This is why I often remind students:Never schedule your GMAT exam right at the application deadline! Always prepare early and take the exam early. Eliminate all uncontrollable variables, leaving yourself with only fully controllable essay work. This is the safest and most secure application strategy!
