Yesterday, I went to a wedding for a high school classmate. Over drinks, a classmate I never thought would have any connection to business school suddenly said:
“I actually took the GMAT back in the day. I’ve been quietly following your channel and articles. Everything you share is really good.”
I remember it was my second year of messing around with the GMAT, and I had discussed issues with over 500 test-takers. But I’m a bit of a slacker, so I quickly realized I was answering the same questions every week! Things like, “What to do about test anxiety?” “How to approach the summary?” you name it.
For each of these questions, it took me over half an hour to explain and analyze in detail. I quickly realized I had become a “talking machine,” often repeating the same things 10-15 times a month.
So, it suddenly hit me. Back in 2014, when there weren’t many YouTubers, I decided to make videos and write articles about common questions and put them online. When test-takers asked these more general questions, I’d just send them the link (smirk).
That was the selfish motivation at the very beginning.
Over time, I found that the more I shared, the more I wanted to share. The more I did, the more I wanted to complete. The more people I helped, the more people I wanted to help. As they say, “Helping others is addictive.” The sense of accomplishment I gained from it has kept me making over a hundred videos and writing more than 150 articles related to GMAT preparation to this day.
Some people always ask: Is Dustin doing this to advertise and promote his courses to make a fortune? Honestly, the ideas I’ve put online could probably fill several courses already. The purest motivation for making these shares was truly just “laziness at first, then unstoppable later.”
Of course, if this leads students to choose A2GMAT or Dustin, I’m extremely happy. Because every enrollment from a student represents an acknowledgment of my expertise. This is my profession, and I am proud of it. I also think it’s awesome to work with the strongest elites in the GMAT teaching world, not the riff-raff out there.
It’s just that I’m still not a very nice person and I’m very lazy, so please bear with me going forward! You’ll get used to it, you’ll get used to it!
