GMAT Score: How Many Questions Can You Miss for 705+?

First, the Conclusion: Scores Aren’t Calculated This Way.

Missed two Critical Reasoning (CR) questions on the GMAT Verbal section, yet somehow landed a 100th percentile score? Sounds wild, I know, but it actually happens.

How is this possible? Let me break down the two likely scenarios:

Unveiling the Mystery of High Scores: Two Possibilities

Possibility One: You Encountered Unscored “Test Questions”

The GMAT includes a number of “Pretest Questions” scattered throughout the exam. These don’t count towards your score. GMAC uses them to gather data on how students perform, helping them decide if these questions are good enough to make it into the official question bank later. So, those two questions you missed? They might have been unscored pretest questions.

Possibility Two: Extremely Difficult Questions That Don’t Harm Your Relative Ranking

Your GMAT percentile rank is a relative measure – it shows how you stack up against other test-takers worldwide. These two questions could have been some of the toughest in the entire official question bank.

This means everyone else scoring at the top, including you, might have gotten them wrong. If everyone struggled, missing these questions wouldn’t hurt your relative standing, allowing you to keep that 100th percentile score.

The Most Important Conclusion: Stop Believing in “Accuracy Rate”!

I’ve always stressed that the GMAT score is not calculated based on your accuracy rate. If you’re still guessing your score based on how many questions you get right, please stop immediately!

Blindly believing in your “accuracy rate” is as absurd as believing the world will end on July 5th!

The GMAT’s adaptive testing algorithm uses multiple factors, including question difficulty and discrimination, to accurately gauge your ability level. Simply counting the number of correct answers doesn’t reflect this complex process.
